The Books

“We started working together in 2000 while living as neighbors in Inwood, a small neighborhood at the very northern tip of Manhattan, regularly referred to as ‘Upstate Manhattan’ by New Yorkers. Over the next few years we moved around a lot but always kept the music going through the mail, and occasional recording sessions. Since 2002 we’ve settled our working studio in the Berkshire Mountains of North Adams, Massachusetts. We do all of our own sample collecting, composing, writing, recording, mixing, and mastering in our home studios using PCs running cheap software and the ragtag equipment that we’ve pieced together over the years. What you hear on our records is exactly how it left our hands, with no producer, engineers, or sweetening in between.”

RISD’s finest folklore. Started in 2006, Penn Sultan and Kevin Sullivan have been breeding gorgeous tunes through their instruments and girly smiles together. Now accompanied by Arthur Drummer, and Spoto Fiddle, the quadro faces serious charges against them in the court of law. We hope they never stop, and we hope they never break up with us. Last Good Tooth is everything you need them to be.

Marco Benevento

Marco Benevento is a pianist, organist and composer from Brooklyn, New York. Benevento is known for his effected piano work with his trio as well as his Hammond Organ and Wurlitzer Electric Piano work with the Benevento Russo Duo. Benevento has also been a member of the New York’s jazz and experimental music scene since 1999.

Boy Crisis is limited liability corporation that produces “highly license-able” proto-post popular music for lovemaking, dancing, shopping, aiding cinematic narrative and other means of consumption. They are confused about their roles in their own lives and the lives of others but ultimately wish only to love and be loved.

Volvox

Boston’s queen of techno, Volvox has been pushing the sound and spirit of Berlin dance culture since 2006. Her bold and energetic sets have made her a favorite among party devotees. From her residencies at Cambridge’s weekly Thursday Make It New and Basstown’s monthly Visions to guest sets at all of Boston’s best bars, clubs and basements, she knows exactly how to get the bodies rocking.

Horse’s Mouth

“A Brooklyn native, Tavo Carbone met his bandmates, drummer J.J. Beck, bassist Matt Scott, violinist Heather Sommerlad, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Chinworth, at Bennington College. The members of Horse’s Mouth have been playing Carbone’s songs together in various forms since 2005 (including, at one point, a 17 piece orchestra), and officially formed Horse’s Mouth in 2008. Amil Byleckie

Amil Byleckie (b. 1980 USA) has been resisting his inevitable fate to be a heartthrob pop-star for over a decade. Strategies utilized to thwart this destiny include: bad haircuts, the awkward use of interpretive dance in performance routines, dabbling with puppetry, elaborate pop operas about pirate-snakes, devotion to producing a you-tube sitcom about economics, and a stint singing only songs with lyrics lifted straight from Phoenix adult personal ads. Destiny has its own designs though. Through all the side roads taken he has never forsaken his pop roots and has coalesced finally into a force of unstoppable catchiness.

Micah Jackson

Micah Salkind and Jackson Morley, also known as Micah Jackson, are a Lawrence Kansas-bred, Providence Rhode Island-based DJ duo committed to exploding the boundaries between Hip House, Soul, Garage and Basement Jams. In June 2007 they launched a monthly party, Providence Is Burning, with friends and fellow Providence DJs Sammy Bananas and Certified Max (Certified Bananas) to pioneer their eclectic mix of styles and intimate approach to club culture. In 2008 they launched Goosebumps, a collaboration with Providence native Morgan Louis (Hearthrob/Lovelife). Micah Jackson now spin a monthly residency at The Dark Lady on third Fridays.

Gordon Voidwell

Gordon Voidwell is the alter-ego of a Bronx-born ex-chorister turned rap geek, Will Johnson. A multi-instrumentalist, a trained vocalist and a published fashion writer, His music is subversive pop & funk, following in line with Tom Tom Club, Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, and George Clinton. He uses analog synthesizers and chunky drum machines as the backdrop for silky, reverb-drenched vocals—reminiscent of Cameo, New Edition and other championed 80s R&B crooners.

Take a Break Music & Arts Festival is a new RISD event aiming to bring people together in a relaxing way and for good reasons. Its primary function is to celebrate the juncture between music, art, and community while raising money for a good cause. This year we are working with Partners in Health to show our support for the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Expect good music, art installation, art sales, local food, local beer, and good people.

Partners In Health (PIH) has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. PIH works to bring modern medical care to poor communities in 12 countries around the world. The work of this organization has three goals: to care for patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities, and to share lessons learned around the world.

Based in Boston, PIH employs more than 11,000 people worldwide, including doctors, nurses and community health workers. The vast majority of PIH staff are local nationals based in the communities they live in.

In the same way that RISD seeks to collaborate with people creatively and artistically, PIH continually forms collaborative bonds between local communities in the regions that they assist. Specifically, the funds raised through RISD’s Take a Break Music & Arts Festival will be donated to PIH’s Mirebalais Community Hospital project – a hospital that will play a key role in the cultivation of Haiti’s healthcare infrastructure. Students at RISD will be able to watch this hospital design unfold and support this important project as it develops. Every ticket to the main event includes 1 free raffle ticket. Buy as many raffle tickets as you want.

Volunteer on May 8th with Take a Break!

As volunteer staff you will receive 1 free ticket and t-shirt, and two free raffle tickets.

All volunteers will be committing to a two hour (minimum) shift on whatever crew fits your best interest. If we do not receive enough help in any particular area, there is a chance you will be re assigned to an alternative position.

Call for Installations

Celebrate the junction where music, art, and people come together. Create an installation to be displayed on Nick Green and seen by hundreds of people.

The re-appropriation of old projects is totally encouraged as well.

What do we first experience upon entering the festival? This should be a gateway, something we transition through from the street onto Nick Green.

Kinetic

Ever been to a concert and seen a condom floating the crowd, being pushed around the room? Don’t you remember the blow up shark that your high school friends thought would be a hilarious addition to the graduation ceremony? This object, installation, or sculpture should promote play and interactivity within the crowd while listening to music.

Art Sale

This will be the icon representing Art & Music together in our minds. What does it mean to install visual music? What if an itunes visualizer were a 3d object, a place, a time?

Beer Garden

Something that promotes relaxation and comfort for our happy beer goers. Does it generate shade? Is it comfortable to sit on, lean on, or swim in? Does it feel tropical and garden like? Are there rare birds hidden inside?

Second Stage

We are literally looking for a bad ass team of wood wielders to build us a second stage for DJ’s and other performers during the festival. We’ll provide the necessary material and supplies, you guys design and build a rag tag (needs to be stable) band stand.

Get Sold

The Take a Break Festival will be hosting a student art sale on the festival grounds. We want you to take this opportunity to sell your work and get exposure.

Tables will cost $25 and %100 of that will be donated to Partners In Health.

Dear printmakers and non-majors with skills,

Poster sale opportunity! If you feel compelled to make an edition (must be hand printed) please choose your weapon and go forth.

Ideally, printers would create work around any of the following themes. However, non-thematic poster art is completely welcome.

Because this is part of the fundraiser, expect that 10% of your sales will be donated to Partners In Health. Also, if you need help paying for paper and ink please contact , however no guarantee that we can cover the cost.

There is no table fee for those vendors interested in donating %20 profits to Partners In Health and a small fee for those that wish to only make money. Either way, we would love to have your delicious product available for us to enjoy.

Expect a huge turn out, and the likely hood that you’ll sell a ton.
